‘Bringing the Outside In’ Project at Willen Hospice

A lovely mention about the ‘Outside In’ project which I did with Dr. Ulka Karandikar has been included on Willen Hospice’s recent blog update about their current building work:

” The boarded corridor was beautifully decorated with a hand drawn art scene by local artist Andrea Willette. The Hospice’s Dr. Ulka Karandikar collaborated with Andrea in designing and drawing a large scale black and white mural in the In-Patient Unit. Taking inspiration from the surrounding landscape, the three panels include flowers, water and trees. Staff, visitors and volunteers helped complete the large scale mural over the course of one weekend. One visitor commented, “it was a nice distraction for the children at this difficult time”. “

Stone Carving workshop

During my residency at Westbury Arts Centre this summer, I was able to attend the workshops running there, including the two-day stone carving workshop by Adam Williamson. I had never tried any kind of carving before, and it was a lot of fun and something I’d like to try more of, along with wood carving.

‘Outside In’ participatory art project at Willen Hospice

Over the past few weeks I have been working with Ulka Karandikar at Willen Hospice in Milton Keynes to create a large three-part mural. I worked directly onto a temporary wall inside the hospice, which is up for the duration of the building work for the ‘Outside In’ building extension project.

The images for the drawings in the mural took inspiration from the ‘Outside In’ theme, and have used nature scenes from Willen Lake and the gardens in the hospice. Three panels were done in total: a scene of the lake, a scene of a path leading into some trees, and an image of flowers from the garden.

Today we invited visitors and staff to colour in the mural, leaving crayons for anyone passing by to get involved. It was brilliant fun to do from start to finish – from drawing the mural, to meeting the wonderful staff and visitors while I was drawing, and seeing everyone enjoying colouring on the walls once it was finished.

Photographs are yet to come, but in the meantime here are some images of the mural in progress:

Masking workshop

I’m about halfway through my Residency at Westbury Arts Centre now, so I thought I should share some photos of what I’ve been up to so far! I will post more stuff soon, but for now here are some pictures from a recent workshop here that I attended. It was learning masking techniques run by artist Cathy Read, who currently is currently exhibiting with ceramist and architect Sally Brooks in the ‘Shack to City’ exhibition in the house here at Westbury Arts Centre.

It was really refreshing to be learning new techniques, and I really enjoyed spending the day playing and experimenting. As a beginner you feel a lot more free to play and less precious about the outcome, which I think is an important attitude to try and maintain at any level of your art practice.

Various stages of the process.

Playing!

Another finished piece, using a different masking technique to the previous piece.
